LHS Students Learn About Critical Medical Care

In an emergency, a few minutes could be the difference lhsairmethods2017between life and death. For some, that means getting to the hospital quickly via an air ambulance.

Students taking safety related courses at Liverpool High School had the opportunity to learn more about critical emergency care when they met with medical staff from LifeNet of New York. The organization, a part of the Air Methods program, provides emergency air transports for critical care patients.

The representatives, including a registered nurse, certified paramedic and pilot, spoke with students about the skills and training they need to help patients in variety of emergency situations, including trauma, respiratory & cardiac episodes, and burns. LHS students also had the chance to tour one of LifeNet of New York’s air ambulances, which is equipped with specialty medical interiors.

Students taking Onondaga Community College’s Personal Safety Course with LHS health teacher Todd Aemmer or Anatomy & Physiology courses with LHS science teachers Richard Baier and Michael Schmedicke had the opportunity to attend the presentation. LifeNet of New York provides services to 60 counties in New York, Vermont, Western Massachusetts and Northeastern Pennsylvania. Since 2002, LifeNet has provided transport to more than 135,000 critical patients.
