LHS Senior to Join US Marine Corp Band

Monday, February 3, 2020

Liverpool High School senior Ezequiel Gonzalez Photo of LHS senior Zeke Gonzalez.recently was accepted into the United States Marine Corp Bands program.

Gonzalez enlisted and was sworn in as a Marine on November 6, but at the time had not selected a military occupational specialty. His recruiter knew of his interest in music, and told him there was an opening in the band program for a percussionist.

The LHS senior auditioned for the program by playing three instruments – concert snare, xylophone and drum set. He was asked to prepare 10 musical pieces – three on the mallet and seven on the concert snare – as well as display basic rudiments, drum set styles, scales and sight reading.

“I would stay after (school) for hours each week to make it as perfect as possible,” Gonzalez said.

Although he originally wanted to play the trumpet as a fourth-grader, Gonzalez eventually chose percussion instead. He developed his passion for music when he joined Liverpool Indoor Percussion in eighth-grade, setting a goal to be center snare (section leader) and expanding his musical talents by learning to play piano.

“I would like to be a professional musician some day and be able to play in as many groups as possible,” Gonzalez said, adding that he is grateful to all Liverpool Central School District’s music teachers for helping make that possible. “I have been taught to play well enough to be able to make a career out of my passion.”

“I hope to serve at least four years in the USMC Band, and hopefully many more,” he added.

After graduation from LHS, Gonzalez will participate in 13 weeks of recruit training, then attend the Naval School of Music. There he will receive advanced musical training, both instrumental and academic, before being assigned to one of the Marine Corps bands.
