LHS Annex Holds First Annual Liverpool Poster Contest

Wednesday, May 9, 2018

For centuries, art and poetry have inspired many, Photo of students working on a computer.eliciting emotion and imagination.

Liverpool High School Annex library media specialist Norm Bagley and art teacher Caitlin Reeves wholeheartedly agree. Inspired by the annual Syracuse Poster Project, the pair decided that a similar collaboration would help foster the creativity of their students. Soon the Liverpool Poster Project Contest was born.

To kick off the project, Bagley introduced the students to haiku, a very short poem in the English language. He then asked them to brainstorm ideas and write a few of their own. Once completed, students were asked to select a haiku written by another student to interpret it in digital art form using Adobe Photoshop during class with Reeves.

Students were asked to vote for the top five posters from each of Reeves’ five art classes, which were then narrowed down to the Top 10 overall by Annex teachers and staff.

The Top 10 were displayed in large poster format throughout the Annex during the month of April, which was National Poetry Month. Poster contest winners (both the haiku writer and the poster creator) were determined from those Top 10 posters.

Winners of the First Annual Liverpool Poster Project Contest were:

  • First Place: Emily Klein (poster) and Jaida McBride (haiku)
  • Second Place: Nadia Burton (poster) and Keria Conklin (haiku)
  • Third Place: Avery Blowers (poster) and Nate Harmon (haiku)
  • Honorable Mention: Mia Avotins (poster) and Andrea Ledford (haiku)
  • Honorable Mention: Mikayla Anguish (poster) and Randi Phelps (haiku)
