LCSD BOE Presents Distinguished Service Award to Frank Sofia
Friday, September 8, 2017
On September 6, the Liverpool Central School District Board of Education presented its 2017 Distinguished Service Award to long-time district employee Frank Sofia.
Since 1965, Sofia’s life passion has been serving the students of Liverpool – first as a teacher at Liverpool High School and then as a member of the school’s athletic department.
During his 35-year teaching career, Sofia became involved in numerous school-wide activities – initiating a pep club, serving as student council advisor, and helping create numerous new traditions focusing on school spirit – including the first senior lounge, the Welcome Frosh Dance, the annual bonfire and homecoming floats.
He also became synonymous with the LHS Alumni Association by becoming the go-to person for class reunions, producing a newsletter for graduates and organizing an annual alumni dinner dance.
Sofia retired in 2000 but was asked to return a short time later as the LHS stadium coordinator, a position he has held for the last 17 years. He also serves as the advisor for the LHS Varsity Club, which allows senior athletes to play an integral part in athletic issues and activities.
“It was hugs, handshakes and smiles from day one,” Sofia said of his time in Liverpool.
BOE President Craig Dailey said it was fitting to honor Sofia for his more than 50 years of service because “he represents the heart, soul and spirit of the Liverpool Central School District.”
The Distinguished Service Award was created as a way to recognize outstanding and long-standing commitment, contributions, interest, dedication, achievement and/or community service.
The award is presented each year to an individual or organization that meets one or more of the following criteria:
- Has made a significant and positive impact on our community (the village of Liverpool, the towns of Clay or Salina, or the county of Onondaga) and who has made a difference in the lives of our residents and/or students
- Has brought honor or positive public recognition to our community
- Has made significant contributions or has enriched the quality of life, vitality, health, welfare, success or diversity of our community
- Is otherwise determined to be worthy of such an award.
